GARDENING ~ WHY SAVE SEEDS

There are all kinds of reasons to save seeds from year to year.

  1. Cost - You save money by saving your seeds each year.  Go and look at the price of seeds.  They are expensive.  A small pack can cost $5 and you may only get a dozen seeds.  Then just how many will actually germinate?
  2. Flavor - Yes, the taste of a vegetable is important.  Why else do you eat a vegetable but for the flavor?  Saving seeds from a tasty vegetable will help to ensure that you will have that plant next year.  Saving seeds from a good healthy strong heirloom plant is essential for flavor next year.
  3. Increase in self-reliance.
  4. You do not have to rely on a store having the seeds you want from year to year.
  5. Create memories with your family.
  6. Establish a sense of knowledge of plant's cycle.
  7. Teaching people how to provide for themselves.
  8. Learn more about your area.
  9. Brings you slower to nature.
  10. Experience the wonder of being outside.
Believe me, I could go on and on about why you should save seeds.  Here are just 10 of my favorite reason.  I truly love the fact you can save your seeds each year and in doing so you are not only being frugal you are establishing vegetables you enjoy from year to year.  I enjoy ripping open my packet of seeds and putting my hands in the dirt and planting those seeds.  I love the anticipation of the seed erupting into a seedling.  I have been known to call them my babies.  It gives me such pleasure to see a plant I have grown become something that will provide for me, my family and friends.

Of course, not all seeds are the same.  I suggest if you decide to save seeds you will save from an heirloom plant.  Heirloom seeds are just that, seeds that have been passed down from generation to generation.  They are true to their parent plant.

Enjoy!!
