THICK HONEY BBQ SAUCE IN A FLASH

On Memorial Day, Scott smoked wings and burgers for us and my daughter.  I made deviled eggs and a quinoa salad for sides.  However, when we started talking about sauces for the wings I realized I did not have any BBQ sauce for MacKenzie.  She likes honey barbeque sauce on her wings.  I like honey sriracha and Scott likes desert heat rub.  I had already been to the grocery store earlier that day and did not want to go back out.

I decided to make my own honey barbeque sauce.  I wanted it thick and sweet.  I really just played around and came up with a few ingredients that I had on hand.

I started off with ketchup.

add honey

add brown sugar

add apple cider vinegar

add pepper

add onion powder

add Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice

add garlic salt

add dijon mustard

I put everything in a saucepan and brought it to a slow boil and then simmered for about an hour.

HONEY BBQ SAUCE

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 C ketchup
  • 1/2 C honey
  • 1/4 C brown sugar
  • 1/2 C apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp Worchester Sauce
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
Directions
  • Add all the ingredients and bring to a low boil then reduce heat to a simmer.  Allow simmering until desired consistency.
You can put this together in under 5 minutes.  You do not have to simmer a long time because it is already thick but I did let mine gone a long time just because I had the time while the wings were smoking.

Overall I thought it was really good.  I think this would be good on about anything you use BBQ sauce on.  Chicken, ribs or even meatballs.

Again I really like making my own stuff because then you know how much sodium and preservatives you have added or not added.

Adaptions
Add liquid smoke to make a smoking BBQ sauce
Add sriracha to make a sriracha BBQ sauce
Hot pepper powder to make a spicy BBQ sauce
Add Bourbon for a honey bourbon BBQ sauce

ENJOY!!
